Tech & Sleep: Can Wearables Help You Sleep Better?

Wearable technology has changed the way we monitor and improve sleep. Devices like the Oura Ring, Fitbit, and WHOOP provide detailed insights into sleep stages, heart rate variability (HRV), and oxygen levels to help users understand their sleep patterns and make improvements.

According to a 2022 study published in Nature and Science of Sleep, individuals who tracked their sleep with wearables improved their deep sleep by an average of 45 minutes per night after making small lifestyle adjustments.

How to Use Sleep Trackers Effectively:

  • Monitor trends in your sleep patterns over time rather than focusing on single-night data.
  • Identify sleep disruptors, such as late-night eating, alcohol, or stress.
  • Adjust your bedtime routine and sleep environment based on collected data.
  • Use sleep coaching insights provided by professionals to improve overall sleep quality.

Limitations of Wearables:

While sleep trackers can provide valuable insights into sleep patterns, they also have limitations that users should be aware of. Wearables cannot diagnose medical conditions, such as sleep apnea or insomnia, but they may indicate potential issues.

For example, low oxygen saturation levels, frequent night-time awakenings, or abnormal heart rate patterns detected by a sleep tracker could suggest the need for further medical evaluation. However, only a formal sleep study (polysomnography) conducted by a healthcare provider can accurately diagnose sleep disorders.

Additionally, movement-based sleep tracking methods (used by most wearables) may misinterpret restless sleep as wakefulness or stillness as sleep, leading to inaccurate sleep quality assessments. While wearables are a useful tool for monitoring trends and making lifestyle adjustments, they should not be relied upon as a replacement for clinical evaluation and personalized medical guidance.
