Making Vegetables Tastier

Reaching our daily recommended amount of vegetables can be difficult. Read on for new recipes on tasty vegetable tips to help you get all the right nutrients!

 

One of the biggest questions I get from clients is not about how to eat more vegetables, but how to make them taste better. The best advice I can give is to find out how you like them cooked.

 

The best way to cook vegetables is to not cook them at all. The nutritional quality is in the chemical structure of the phytonutrients in the plants and heat can break these down. However, not everyone likes to eat them raw or likes them all the time.

 

There are many ways to cook vegetables, from roasting, steaming, boiling and pan-frying. To get maintain the most nutritional quality when cooking vegetables it is best to expose them to heat for as short a time as possible. This can be done by baking them at a low temperature, at a high temperature but for a very short time, or through steaming.

 

The texture can have a strong influence on how they taste. I’ve heard many people state they don’t like to eat vegetables because they are too mushy. My answer to that is to play around with the cooking times and stop when they get to a texture you enjoy. Personally, I prefer my vegetables a bit more al dente.

 

Finally, the secret for wanting to eat more vegetables with your meals is to learn to season them better. A pinch of salt and pepper is fine, but I suggest experimenting with other herbs and spices. My favorites are garlic powder, cumin, turmeric and smoked paprika.
