How to Get Tuned Up for Ski Season!

Healthy Lifestyle for Winter Sports

Now is a great time to focus on preparing for ski season. With several weeks remaining before the snow begins to pile up on the mountains, there is ample time to get ready for a great season on the slopes. Whether you ski, snowboard or snowshoe, these pre-season tips will give your season a lift.

Physical Tune-up:

Strength and stability are both important for a successful season. Building muscles in your legs is key but don’t forget about core strength. Check out your local fitness center or even look online for classes that specifically address these muscle groups.

Programs should start with a build phase weighed toward balance and stability exercises. Yoga, barre and Pilates are movement disciplines that can be tailored to any fitness level to allow you to build endurance and strength. As the season gets closer you’ll want to add in in dynamic exercises (think HIIT workouts) that will set you up for success and decrease injury risk.

Consider tracking physical changes with body composition measurements. At Empowered Health, our patients have access to an advanced device that tracks changes in skeletal muscle mass, intercellular water, visceral fat, weight and more; all key factors for improving overall health. For home use, an electrical impedance scale is a great option.

Gear Tune-Up:

A key component of injury prevention is ensuring your equipment is in proper working order. Local ski shops get busy as the season approaches, so make an effort to get in early before the mad rush of opening day on the mountain. Getting ahead of the crowd also gives you time for any repairs or adjustments your equipment may be due to have. Consider treating yourself to a pair of fun socks or gloves, to both keep you warm and increase excitement for the season.

Nutrition Tune-Up:

Enjoying a day at high altitude and in cold temperatures places excessive demands on your brain and body.  It’s important to consume the proper amount of calories to fuel your adventure. Your body uses more energy at high altitudes and you’ll exert more energy than usual. Hormones levels are elevated when you exercise at higher altitudes and your body’s need for carbohydrates as fuel is increased. Additionally, avoiding alcohol use while on the slopes can go a long way to having a fun and safe day on the slopes.

If you are more competitive and want to go deeper into nutrition optimization, a detailed evaluation now with your healthcare provider or nutritionist can help get you set up for a terrific season.
