What is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition where the gut lining becomes permeable, allowing toxins, bacteria and undigested food particles to enter the bloodstream. This can lead to a range of health problems and symptoms, including bloating, gas, fatigue, skin issues, and food sensitivities.
What Causes Leaky Gut?
There are several factors that can contribute to leaky gut, including:
- Poor diet: A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and refined carbohydrates can lead to inflammation and damage to the gut lining.
- Stress: Chronic stress has been shown to negatively impact gut health, leading to increased permeability.
- Antibiotics: Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the gut, leading to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
- Alcohol and medications: Alcohol and certain medications can also damage the gut lining.
How to Heal Leaky Gut
There are several steps you can take to help heal a leaky gut:
- Eat a nutritious diet: Focus on eating nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, berries, fermented foods and lean protein.
- Reduce stress: Practicing stress-management techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help reduce the negative impact stress has on the gut.
- Take a probiotic: Adding a high-quality probiotic supplement to your diet can help to restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut.
- Avoid triggers: Avoid foods and substances that you know trigger symptoms, and try to limit alcohol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Leaky gut can have a significant impact on your overall health and well-being. By making changes to your diet, reducing stress, and supporting gut health, you can help to heal and prevent a leaky gut. Consult with a healthcare professional if you suspect you may have a leaky gut, as they can provide further recommendations and support.
