Cervical Cancer: Knowledge is Power for Prevention and Early Detection

Cervical cancer, once a leading cause of death among women, can now be largely prevented and effectively treated when detected early. Yet, many remain uninformed about its causes, risks, and how to take control of their health. This blog aims to empower you with knowledge about cervical cancer, allowing you to make informed decisions for your well-being.

Understanding the Basics:

  • The Cervix: Located at the lower end of the uterus, the cervix connects the vagina to the womb.
  • HPV: The culprit in nearly all cases (99%) is the human papillomavirus (HPV). This common virus, spread through skin-to-skin contact, usually resolves on its own, but high-risk strains can lead to cervical cancer if left unchecked.
  • Development: While HPV infection is common, only persistent infection with high-risk strains promotes abnormal cell growth in the cervix, eventually leading to cancer if not identified and treated early.

Risk Factors:

  • Early sexual debut (<16 years old)
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Smoking
  • Weakened immune system
  • History of other sexually transmitted infections

Prevention and Early Detection:

  • Vaccination: The HPV vaccine can protect against the strains causing most cervical cancers. Recommended for girls and boys starting at age 11 or 12, ideally before sexual debut.
  • Screening: Regular Pap smears and HPV tests can detect precancerous changes before they turn into cancer. For most women, starting at age 21 and following recommended screening intervals is vital.

Symptoms:

  • Early-stage cervical cancer often has no symptoms.
  • Advanced stages may present with:
    • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (between periods, after menopause, or heavier than usual)
    • Pelvic pain
    • Unusual vaginal discharge
